My dorm at UChicago, Maclean House, hadn’t made new shirts in the four years I had lived there. So, in my last quarter at the University, I decided to design a shirt myself.
My experience in graphic design is minimal, but my stupid tenacity was seemingly infinite. Twenty hours of drawing tiny parallel lines in Inkscape later, this was the result.
After I added lettering in CustomInk, this was the final, printed design:
Maclean is so far north from the rest of campus (like, two blocks), that we were regularly cut out of official University maps. Just an arrow pointing north and “Maclean House” to indicate our presence–we were practically mythical. Which also inspired our house motto:
Happily, two weeks before I graduated, the T-shirts were finally made.
For reference, here’s the original pencil-and-ruler sketch I was working off of. Tate Modern, here I come!
